How Dark Self Tanners Function

By Haywwod Hunter

Dark self turners are devices or products used for tanning skin or making its color darker. Dark self tanners or natural sun produce ultraviolet radiation used to attain this effect. Reflected light or windburn may also generate the same effect in case one gets exposed to them for too long.

Dark self tanning might occur deliberately or involuntarily. Individuals who do it voluntarily may use chemical commodities or involve in sun bathing. Prolonged unintentional exposure to sun radiation may present a few benefits along some adverse consequences. The benefit is that exposing the skin to ultraviolet radiation, enables it to synthesize Vitamin D. Sun bathing for too long may cause a higher risk of aging, depressed immune system functioning, skin cancer, and sunburn.

Dark self tanners are produced in various colors, sizes, and shapes. They are built from metallic materials like stainless steel, aluminum, and iron or the respective alloys. They are shaped like cylinders to form a hollow in which a person can lie. Dark self tanners contain leads on which UV sources are fixed. Once one takes position in the cavity, ultraviolet are switched on to radiate the skin. The measurements of dark self tanners are made to suit the size of an adult.

Dark self tanners have set time frames and intensity settings, which one may stay in. Beyond that intensity or time, the radiation becomes unsafe for the skin. Tanning differs among individuals, with others taking a short time while others take very long. The simplicity with which one can tan depends on genetic attributes like natural skin type and color.

There are two major manners in which dark self tanners affect skin color. Ultraviolet beams generated by dark self tanners are categorized into UV-B or UV-A. Both variants lead to melanogenesis, the process through which melanocytes form melanin pigments. Melanin are of 2 kinds, the red one referred to as pheomelanini and the brown one known as eumelanin.

The function of melanin is to absorb solar radiation hence protecting the body. Excess solar rays may cause direct or indirect damage to DNA chains. The body counters such damages by synthesizing and releasing more melanin into the cells of the skin. This increased synthesis of melanin is chiefly triggered by UV-B radiation due to direct photodamage. The tan produced due to this process is darker and lasts longer but it only becomes visible after 72 hours of exposure.

UV-A also results in creation of a tan. Here, UV-A causes oxidative stress, which leads to oxidation of the melanin already present. When melanin is oxidized, its color turns to dark brown. UVA generated by the sun or dark self tanners also causes existing melanin to redistribute although its quantity remains the same. This makes oxidation of melanin less capable of protecting the body against UV damage than UVB. Dark self tanners have a lot of uses in the fashion businesses, where models utilize them to darken their skins before engaging in competitions.

Dark self tanners are costly equipment. They need proper handling and care for them to stay long. If good care is given to dark self tanners, they can stay for several years.
